In addition to my volunteer work, I serve as a Well Association president and have a background in architecture and construction, as well as a career managing multi-million-dollar retail budgets. This experience has prepared me to oversee county finances, infrastructure investments, and long-range planning.</p><p>Each role has led me to this unique opportunity, and I could not be more excited. In school I studied humanities and political science, not realizing someday I would be at this point, but over the past 10 years I have considered running for school board and commissioner. Island County deserves steady, solutions-focused leadership. This is a pivotal moment for our communities, and I’m ready to step up and serve our citizens.</p><p>As a Camano Island resident for 30 years, we have built our lives into this community, raising our daughters and caring for family that also live on the island. This gives me deep understanding of what being a resident of Island County means. Our county works best when leadership listens first. I want to hear from families, small business owners, farmers, first responders, and retirees about what’s working — and what isn’t. My goal is to be a commissioner who is accessible, responsive, and accountable.</p><p>I’ve always believed that if there’s a problem, you gather the right people, put your heads together, and solve it. I might not always have the solution, but someone in the room might. We live in different areas; Island County has very different communities with different needs. A broad paint brush does not always work for everyone.</p><p>Our Growth Management Plan is so important right now as our population grows. This 20-year growth management strategy is required by state law to guide land use, housing, transportation, and environmental protection. It focuses on preserving rural character while accommodating population growth through controlled development, protecting critical areas, and managing water resources.</p><p>We also have an ageing jail that does not meet today’s needs and is past its expected lifetime. Our ICOM 911 system is aged and needs an overhaul. With more growth comes more septic systems. Saltwater intrusion is also a challenge as aquifers get low. We have nearly 10,000 drinking water wells in Island County. Each well association or water provider has different challenges many have aging equipment and different management plans. The county must help them be secure and provide safe water.</p><p>As the proud son of a Marine, supporting veterans and military families is personal to me. Supporting those that serve or have served, including their families, is of the utmost importance. Providing health and mental health care support for those who have served is the least we can do.</p><p>We live in one of the best areas in the country! Being an Island County resident is something special that we should appreciate and unite in. Especially in these divisive times, it's easy to forget what unites us. But I've seen firsthand how our shared values of community, mutual respect, and common purpose can transcend political divisions. These values aren't Republican or Democrat — this is island life!</p><p>I would be honored to earn your vote and continue serving our community as Island County Commissioner. <p>Grant Shaw is well suited to be Island County Commissioner for many reasons. I met Grant 10 years ago as a parent volunteer at Utsalady Elementary, where he revitalized the Booster Club. I currently work with him on the Freedom Park Board of Directors, where he has brought the park from foreclosure to fantastic!</p><p>Because he has done so much for this community, people are always ready to rally behind him when he needs support.</p><p>He has always been an outspoken proponent of Stanwood-Camano Pride and has helped to ensure all of our neighbors are welcome and feel safe.</p><p>He is a man who is not afraid to fight the good fight, tackle hard work, and get the job done. <p><strong>People ask me all the time why there’s a crab on the campaign signs.<br></strong></p><p><strong>The simple answer is because I love crabbing. If you live in Island County, you know there’s just something special about being out on the water early in the morning, checking pots with family and friends, and enjoying everything this place has to offer.<br></strong></p><p><strong>But honestly, the crab also fits my personality pretty well.<br></strong></p><p><strong>Crabs are resilient. They adapt when conditions change. They’re protective of what matters and aren’t afraid to hold their ground when they need to. I think those are good qualities in both people and public service.<br></strong></p><p><strong>At the same time, I wanted the campaign to have some personality and be fun. Politics doesn’t always have to feel stiff and overly serious. The crab became a way to show a little creativity, celebrate Island County life, and hopefully make people smile when they see it.<br></strong></p><p><strong>One of my favorite parts of the project has been working with talented artists to bring the idea to life. Several versions of the crab were created by Tim Jeffs Art and Rob Kramer Art. Tim is known for his incredibly detailed wildlife artwork, and Rob’s work has become iconic around the Pacific Northwest. They each brought their own style and creativity to the campaign, and I’m grateful they helped turn a fun idea into something memorable.<br></strong></p><p><strong>And we're not done yet. Keep an eye out for a new campaign crab created by a Camano Island artist. Supporting artists and local creativity matters to me. <p><em>We decided to go with a unique approach very early in the process.</em></p><p><em>Instead of the typical candidate sign, I wanted something unique to represent me and some of the attributes I represent as a candidate for commissioner. The outdoors, especially crabbing, is a big part of our unique county. It reflects qualities of nurturing, domesticity, and intense emotional depth.</p><p><strong>Chinese Culture:</strong>&nbsp;Crabs are often associated with&nbsp;<strong>success and high status</strong>, particularly in academic exams, because the Chinese word for a crab's shell (<em>jia</em>) also means "first" or "best". <h4>Why a crab logo? </h4>

<p>Island County is a beautiful place that attracts people from around the world. As our population grows, protecting our water resources must remain a priority. More homes and septic systems create real challenges, especially with many water associations operating aging infrastructure. Addressing this will require careful planning and coordination across the county.</p>
