Our Campaign’s Top Issues

I'm Grant Shaw. I've lived on Camano Island for more than 30 years, raised my family here and spent more than 15 years volunteering and giving back to my community.

I'm running for Island County Commissioner because I care about this place and the people who call it home. I've spent my career managing large budgets, leading teams, and solving complicated problems, and I think that experience can be useful in county government.

I believe leadership starts with showing up and listening. I won't pretend to have every answer, but I'll do the homework, listen before I decide and work with people whether we agree or not.

I'm a Democrat, but if I'm elected, I'll be a commissioner for everyone in Island County. I'll be accessible, accountable and always remember who I work for.

Problem solving.

Many issues in a community like ours are unexpected, hyper-local, and operational. Residents deserve commissioners who can gather the right information, assess challenges quickly, and work with partners to resolve problems efficiently. I bring a long history of doing exactly that — listening, evaluating the facts, and taking practical action to get the job done.

Preserving our rural quality of life.

Allowing reasonable, targeted housing growth while protecting farmland, forests, and rural neighborhoods is essential for Island County’s future. Growth is coming — the challenge is managing it carefully so Camano and Whidbey keep the rural character that makes these islands special, rather than becoming just another suburban corridor.

Protecting our drinking water.

Island County is a beautiful place that attracts people from around the world. As our population grows, protecting our water resources must remain a priority. More homes and septic systems create real challenges, especially with many water associations operating aging infrastructure. Addressing this will require careful planning and coordination across the county.
