In school, I studied humanities and political science, not realizing someday I would be at this point. But over the past 10 years I have considered running for school board and commissioner. This is a pivotal moment for our communities, and I’m ready to step up and serve our citizens.As a Camano Island resident for 30 years, we have built our lives into this community. I might not always have the solution but someone in the room might. We live in different areas; Island count has very different communities with different needs. A broad paint brush does not always work for everyone.Our Growth Management Plan is so important right now as our population grows. This 20-year growth management strategy required by state law to guide land use, housing, transportation, and environmental protection. It focuses on preserving rural character while accommodating population growth through controlled development, protecting critical areas, and managing water resourcesWe also have an ageing jail that does not meet today’s needs and is past its expected lifetime. Our ICOM 911 system is aged and needs an overhaul. With more growth comes more septic systems. Saltwater intrusion is also a challenge as aquifers get low. We have nearly 10,000 drinking water wells in Island County. Each well association or water provider has different challenges many have aging equipment and different management plans. The county must help them be secure and provide safe water.As a proud son of a Marine, supporting veterans and military families is personal to me. Supporting those that serve or have served, including their families, is of the utmost importance. Providing health and mental health care support for those who have served is the least we can do.We live in one of the best areas in the country! Being an island county resident is something special that we should appreciate and unite in. Especially in these divisive times, it's easy to forget what unites us. But I've seen firsthand how our shared values of community, mutual respect, and common purpose can transcend political divisions. These values aren't Republican or Democrat — this is island life!I would be honored to earn your vote and continue serving our community as Island County Commissioner. Islanders helping Islanders.

Camano Island resident Grant Shaw announces run for Island County CommissionerGrant Shaw, a 30 year Camano Island resident known locally as a tireless community volunteer and pragmatic problem-solver, announced this week that he is running for Island County Commissioner as a Democrat, seeking to succeed Commissioner Janet St. Clair, who has said she will not seek another term.Shaw said his decision to enter the race months ahead of the May filing week reflects both the urgency of the issues facing Island County and his commitment to giving voters — and potential supporters — clarity early in the election cycle. “Starting my campaign right now allows me to spend more time with the citizens of Island County on both islands and listen to their concerns so I can better serve them.”&nbsp;&nbsp;“Island County deserves steady, solutions-focused leadership,” Shaw said. “This is a pivotal moment for our communities, and I’m ready to step up and serve our citizens.”&nbsp;A Democrat like St. Clair, Shaw said he intends to build on the county’s recent progress while bringing what he describes as a “hands-on, get-it-done” approach to complex challenges. Over the years, Shaw has earned a reputation as a collaborative leader who works across differences to find common ground and move projects forward.Shaw was previously honored with the Jeannie Ovenell Spirit Award by the Camano Island Chamber, recognizing individuals from Stanwood and Camano Island who demonstrate exceptional dedication and care for the community. Many issues in a community like ours are unexpected, hyper-local, and operational. Residents deserve commissioners who can gather the right information, assess challenges quickly, and work with partners to resolve problems efficiently. I bring a long history of doing exactly that — listening, evaluating the facts, and taking practical action to get the job done.

Problem solving.

We decided to go with a unique approach very early in the process.Instead of the typical candidate sign, I wanted something unique to represent me and some of the attributes I represent as a candidate for commissioner. The outdoors, especially crabbing, is a big part of our unique county. The idea of a crab logo quickly became a goal, representing Versatility navigating goals, Resourcefulness and Determination.Fun and whimsical is also a goal of our unique crab logo, created by friend and artist Rob Kramer. Why a crab logo?

Island County is a beautiful place that attracts people from around the world. As our population grows, protecting our water resources must remain a priority. More homes and septic systems create real challenges, especially with many water associations operating aging infrastructure. Addressing this will require careful planning and coordination across the county.
